The Peer Support Network (PSN) is the “operational” or “working arm” of the BME Forum. It enables groups to work collectively to strengthen and sustain their own development, and that of their communities, by being proactive in finding solutions to their shared difficulties, by pooling resources, sharing information and skills, and developing and implementing a ‘plan of action’ to take forward key priority objectives. In short the PSN pushes forward initiatives, learning and development to try and impact upon the needs of BAME communities.
PSN consists of a number of thematic sub-groups whose key aims are to be proactive and creative in responding collaboratively to the common needs of local communities. The sub-groups' themes include. The current focus of all PSN sub-groups is to push forward the agenda as laid out in Merton’s BAME Strategic Plan 2010-2013. The plan articulates BAME organisations’ aspirations, needs and concerns, as expressed by approximately 40 BAME groups (including faith groups), and statutory agencies. Launched in December 2010 the summary version can be found at http://www.mertonunitynetwork.org.uk/Docs/MUN%20summary_final%20(190111).pdf
How often do the groups meet?
The Peer Support Network (PSN) meets quarterly at Vestry Hall.
The PSN sub-groups meet bi-monthly (once every two months) usually at Vestry Hall although alternative locations can be decided upon, depending upon the preference of members.
Who is involved and who can join?
The Peer Support Network is equally open to all local Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. The PSN sub groups are typically made up of a small number of active individuals representing BAME organisations that work in a particular area e.g. Health. PSN sub groups have two lead members, however others are welcome to join if they have a particular interest in the area and are able to make a commitment to the group.
